After releasing a stripped down version of Quicken for Mac named Quicken Essentials 2010, Intuit has released an update for the full version that can run under OS X Lion, a $15 upgrade it calls 'Quicken Mac 2007 OS X Lion compatible.' Thursday, March 08, 2012, 02:43 pm PT (05:43 pm ET)
The original Quicken Mac 2007 supplied a variety of features missing from the more recent release of Essentials 2010, including export to TurboTax, investment tracking and direct bill payments. However, the old version relied on PowerPC code that wouldn't work on OS X Lion, which has terminated support for Rosetta translation.
Intuit has now 'reengineered' Quicken Mac 2007 so that it can run on OS X Lion, and the new update, available as a digital download or on CD-ROM, can import and convert data from Quicken Mac 2005, 2006 or 2007 or Quicken Essentials 2010.
Intuit recommends that 'new Quicken customers should choose Quicken Essentials for Mac to get started,' rather than getting the updated 2007 version with more expert features.
Intuit sells multiple versions of Quicken 2012 for Windows, which it has updated annually. During the five year wait for fully functional software capable of running on the latest Macs, many users have switched to alternatives, including the native iBank, available in the Mac App Store and in a mobile version for iPhone.
Intuit issued an email to their customers today announcing that they are developing a re-engineered Lion-compatible version of Quicken for Mac 2007 after numerous customers voiced their frustration.
According to Intuit general manager Aaron Forth, the company is currently working on a way to make Quicken for Mac 2007 compatible with OS X Lion, and plans to have a solution ready by early spring.
As you may know, Quicken for Mac 2007 does not currently work on Apple’s latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). I understand the frustration this may have caused you and have put a team in place to address this issue. I am happy to announce that we will have a solution that makes Quicken 2007 for Mac “Lion-compatible” by early spring. There are still details to be worked out, so I ask your continued patience as we work through these.

Forth considers this to be just the first step in winning back customers who were disappointed at Quicken for Mac 2007’s lack of Lion compatibility.
The company has published a FAQ on their support website containing details on the upcoming release, as well as answer to common questions that customers might have, as well as a notification system for letting customers know when it becomes available.
